Most eye injuries can be attributed to specks of
flying particles touching the eye and causing irritation, vision impairment
and sometimes, blindness.
Statistics New Zealand reports that 6% of all
work related claims are for 'foreign bodies in eyes'.
This is a staggering 12,348 people per year and
does not include any of the thousands of minor injuries in which a claim
was not made.
Many of these statistics could have been avoided by wearing safety goggles
and ensuring that were on correctly, snugly fitting against the head.
