First Aid FAQs
Fast action is necessary
to prevent permanent damage to the eyes
- Immediately lay the person down and pour cold water gently into the
eye while holding the eyelids open.
- Continue for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
Contact Lenses:
If a person with eye injuries is wearing contact lenses, do NOT
remove them although they may be washed out of the eye during the 15 minute
water flush, often the lens will move about and should only be removed
by a medical person.
Serious Injuries
For serious eye injuries, ensure that the person does not rub their eye,
cover the eye with a soft padding and take the person to hospital. NEVER
try to remove foreign bodies from an eye.
First Aid Facilities
According to New Zealand Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) a first
aid kit and emergency treatment must be available in the work area and
it is recommended that a self-activating eyewash should available.
